Anatomy and Appearance
SIZE: 4 to 5.5 ft. Weight: 70 to 130 lbs Body length: 24.80 inch (63 cm) – 37.01 inch (94 cm). Chimpanzees are our closest cousins; we share about 98 percent of our genes. Chimps usually travel on all fours, though they can walk on their legs like humans for as far as a mile.
Diet
Chimpanzees are omnivores. They rely heavily on a wide variety fruit and leaves, but also eat insects, bark, eggs, nuts, and even hunt monkeys and other small animals. They have a tremendously varied diet that includes hundreds of known foods.
Life Cycle
AVERAGE LIFESPAN IN THE WILD: 40 to 50 years. They go through stages like humans, from adolescence to adulthood.
Reproduction and Young
Baby chimpanzees are the result of mating by the parents. When a chimp is a little baby, it feeds on its mother's milk for three years. Later on, they adopt the behaviors by their parents. Baby chimps are raised mainly by the mother.
Behavior
Chimpanzees live in social communities of several dozen animals, and can adapt themselves to African rain forests, woodlands, and grasslands. Although they normally walk on all fours (knuckle-walking), chimpanzees can stand and walk upright. By swinging from branch to branch they can also move quite efficiently in the trees, where they do most of their eating.
